I was blessed to be a part of the best testing program and conducted most of my testing on the T-Mobile Shadow, a non-touch screen device. I plan to post a review here of this latest and greatest version that adds a ton of functionality for those who use it with non-touch screen devices.

There were also major improvements for touch screen devices and Ed Hansberry posted his full review that I highly recommend you check out. I just received a new HTC Advantage X7510 from HTC at Mobius and loaded this latest version on the device. The Advantage is a fantastic Bible study tool and is my new church sermon note taking machine.

I’ll try to get my review up before the end of the Memorial Day weekend holiday since I plan to stay home and work on my yard most of the weekend, along with a movie trip with my family to see Prince Caspian.

A few years back I had a Fujitsu Tablet PC (my first Tablet) and used a Bible with OneNote on it to take notes and read. I honestly can’t remember what Bible that was, but I now see that Rob Bushway from GottaBeMobile.com is one of the people working on this project so it may have been something from the TabletBible site. In this latest update, Rob announced that the New King James Version is now available for OneNote 2007.

I am loving my Fujitsu U810 UMPC/Tablet PC and have been using Laridian’s PocketBible for Windows on the device. I also have OneNote 2007 that was included with my Fujitsu purchase so I now plan to load up these two Bible translations (the English Standard Version is also available) on my U810 (aka Ubacca). I can’t believe that these are available for FREE and I encourage you to donate to the project if you find them useful.

Projects like this and the excellent Windows Mobile support from Laridian have major impacts on my device buying habits as I have been known to keep Windows Mobile devices just for the Bible support. It looks like I will now have to keep my Fujitsu U810 too since it is one of the lowest cost, yet long battery life Tablet PCs available in a portable form factor.

What a great ministry Rob! Keep up the excellent work.

The Fujitsu U810 UMPC device I purchased a few weeks ago came preloaded with Windows Vista Business and I lived with it for a couple of weeks because I really wanted to give Vista a chance on a dedicated device. However, the U810 specs are quite minimal for Vista (1GB of soldered RAM and an 800 MHz processor) and it was working hard to keep up. I thought I would use the U810 (named Ubacca) for minimal on the go purposes, but even with these practices it still hung up a bit when switching applications and wasn’t very snappy. The nail in the coffin happened yesterday when I tried connecting the Advantage to Ubacca to install an application and it wouldn’t recognize the USB port. I then reformatted the hard drive and installed Windows XP Tablet Edition (the DVD came with the U810 I bought from Fujitsu).

I loaded up my 15+ applications (PocketBible, SlingPlayer, Nokia PC Suite, Office, etc) last night and XP seems to fly on this portable device. So far I am much happier with XP and while Vista looked great, it seems to focus more on multimedia and transitions rather than on working efficiently. I’ll give XP a try for a while and see if this is what I stick too. I wish I could upgrade to 2GB of RAM as that may help, but I knew the limitation going into this purchase so will make it work as best as I can.

Have I mentioned how much I love using Laridian’s mobile Bible products? Oh yes, I have. My online buddy, Susan, sent me a link to an article over on Antoine’s Mobile Ministry Magazine site discussing the Bible Maps functionality found in PocketBible. I have tried this a couple of times on the HTC Advantage, which looks fantastic, and am just now trying it on the new Fujitsu U810 UMPC device. Having the full functionality of Laridian PocketBible, including the sync providers, on the U810 may impact my decision about whether or not to keep the U810.

There is also a Bible Maps discussion on the Laridian blog.

I saw this in action at BibleTech08 and cannot wait to install and take advantage of this functionality. I think this will enhance my Bible study practices since I can now bookmark and make notes and then sync them across platforms. Visit the sync providers page on the Laridian site to download these sync conduits.

If you go visit the Laridian web site then you will notice a new product that was just added to their lineup yesterday. Laridian has branched out from Palm and Windows Mobile devices to the Windows PC. PocketBible for Windows is available now. If you already have Bibles from your Palm, Windows Mobile or BlackBerry device then you can use those same Bibles in the Windows software so your PocketBible library goes with you.

I have been beta testing this version of PocketBible and another great feature is that you can store and run PocketBible right from a USB flash drive so you can use it on any PC without leaving the software behind and can now use it at the library, office, or anywhere else you can’t or don’t want to install it on the PC itself. I actually ran PocketBible for Windows on my MacBook Pro using Parallels in coherence mode and found it to be an outstanding piece of software.

I personally think it is great to see PocketBible expand to Windows and back when I had Qbacca (a Samsung Q1 UMPC) this was something I was desperately looking for. I think it will be a wonderful application for the UMPC, but I don’t have one of these anymore.

Samsung announced the Q1 Ultra with some advanced features so I am now selling my 1 year old Samsung Q1 UMPC. This unit comes with the original box and everything in MINT condition (really it looks brand new), except for the missing cheap stylus. It has been upgraded to 1 GB of RAM and I’ll include the original 512MB RAM module too. I am also including the extended life battery along with the standard battery. I paid over US$1,350 for all of this equipment, but am only asking for US$700. This is cheaper than the refurbs on Woot and includes a lot more (1GB RAM and extended battery). Please email me at palmsoloATgmailDOTcom if you are interested.

I just sat down to work on some Geek and ZDNet reviews and some of my regular naval architecture work when all power was lost throughout our house and every house within at least a 3 block radius. I just started tested out and taking photos of the Sprint EVDO Rev. A USB modem. Prior to today I was only seeing something around dialup speeds at my house, but earlier this morning when I tried out the modem at work (where I have 4 bars) a firmware update was downloaded and applied. Then when testing it out at home with this new firmware, I am seeing 1-3 bars with download speeds of about 500 kbps and uploads of 250 or so. This isn’t DSL, but it sure is faster than any other wireless service I have so I am able to continue working.

Qbacca has been all over the country and soon all over the world with me (going on my London trip) and I just can’t give him up. I think he’ll be a very valuable assistant at CES when I take him on the show floor to post live on Geek.com. I now need to get a new Bluetooth keyboard or Samsung USB travel kit.

I use my MacBook Pro a lot at home and on the road when I travel. I also take my Q1 on the road for many trips and like using the device. I am getting a new laptop at work soon and we run GroupWise there rather than Outlook so I will be using that laptop too. This just seems like too many PCs to manage, not counting the 2 desktops at home that my wife and daughters use. I have my Samsung Q1 up for sale on a couple of websites right now, but dang I really don’t know if I should give it up.
