Nokia N90 is an awesome vacation camera

We are on a weeklong family vacation to Disney World in Orlando and my wife is taking photos with a Canon SD450 camera while I am using the Nokia N90. The Nokia is actually proving to take better photos in many situations and I am snapping away with my 1GB card allowing me to go all day without any worries. The quality is proving to be excellent and the convenience of carrying around a camera and a phone in one device while not being required to carry my Treo 650 is great. I did take my Treo the first day to post some SplashBlog entries, but as you can see the photos are not as good of quality and it doesn't make much sense to take both devices with me so I will try just the N90 today and see if the battery can handle it.

BTW, you have to check out this photo since it is probably the first time a Nokia N90 has taken a ride on the Aerosmith Rock 'n Roller rollercoaster at MGM Studios. I tried taking photos while on the ride and I think we were turning too many Gs to get a steady shot.

Rather than bore everyone with all my Disney World photos taken with my N90 and uploaded via LifeBlog, please check out the Disney World 2006 Flickr set I created where I will now upload my photos. Almost all these photos were taken with a Nokia N90 cameraphone too.

I may still post a few photos directly here via LifeBlog, but just ones that I think my readers will particularly enjoy :)

Way to go SEAHAWKS!!!

I remember the days when I used to go to the Kingdome for the Seahawks game to watch a few players (Largent and Krieg come to mind) and the other team that was playing the Seahawks. About 6 years ago Mike Holmgren came over from Green Bay and I thought we were going to start winning all the time. It took a few years, but the Seahawks are HOT right now and are playing like a well-oiled machine. Hasselbach is in a groove, Alexander is the MVP and has an incredible offensive line in front of him, our defense is solid and Tatupu is absolutely amazing (especially when you consider he is a rookie). They showed the Carolina Panthers they are determined to go to the Super Bowl and Pittsburgh better have a good game to stop the rolling Seahawks. I think this is the year for Seattle and the whole town is quite excited by the prospects.

Update: Moving to WordPress soon

I have been contemplating this for some time and will be moving from Blogger to WordPress. I want more options to format my blog and am tired of trying to customize Blogger templates. I also want categorization, a calendar, and some other functionality that I don't get in Blogger. Please be patient as I make the conversion.

Update: Well, I have WordPress installed and my Blogger blog is now imported into WordPress and can be viewed here. I want to find another template to use before turning on the WordPress blog and with my weeklong DisneyWorld vacation coming up I may hold off until after my vacation or maybe I'll mess with it late at night in Florida :)

Sling Media and SlingBox ROCKS!

I previously posted on my SlingBox remote viewing problems and then received an email from Jeremy Toeman from Sling Media. I couldn't work with him at the time since I was traveling, but as soon as I returned from my most recent Alaska trip he was there to offer assistance. It turned out that all my trouble was due to me assigning the wrong IP address to the port I was forwarding on my Cisco 678 DSL modem. I was opening up the SlingBox IP address and not my SMC wireless router IP and was rather confused by all the IP addresses floating around in my system. Jeremy was very sharp and quickly had me setting up the right IP address.

I also discovered there is a new public beta of the SlingPlayer that includes a remote for my Comcast Motorola DVR box so that is awesome too! It is now much easier to control my TV and DVR with this remote just like the one I have in my house. We are now all setup to watch our DVR on our trip to Florida and DisneyWorld this next week although we may be too busy and tired to watch much TV.

If you are a frequent traveler then you really may want to consider a SlingBox. I actually use it quite a bit in my own house since we can now watch TV anywhere my Tablet PC goes. I have been watching TV when doing the dishes quite a bit and could even see having mounts for a slate Tablet in your house for remote TV viewing.

ROM update for Treo 650 released

I LOVE using my Treo 650 device and am very pleased with my decision to stick with it over the HTC Wizard due to its super functionality. Palm just released a ROM update for the GSM unlocked version yesterday (see the details in my Geek.com blurb) and I may have to perform it when I get back from Alaska later tonight. I haven't seen many reports from people who have performed the update yet, but I like the listing that shows improved data performance.

I have been getting a super signal up here in Ketchikan, Alaska with my Treo and find it has the strongest signal of any device I have owned. The i-mate SP5m (HTC Tornado) also get an amazing signal, especially considering there is no external antenna on it.

Hollywood and entertainment in America is ridiculous

I think it is funny to see Hollywood fawn all over itself during this time of year with all the silly award shows. It is incredible how much Americans pay for entertainment with actors, athletes, and others who were blessed making millions of dollars while incredibly hard working people who actually make people's lives better and work to help our country function get paid dirt in comparison. I think teachers should get paid the big bucks and athletes something like $100,000 a year.

Anyway, I was pretty surprised to see the very low attended gay cowboy movie, Brokeback Mountain, win 4 Golden Globes. I mean, I knew Hollywood would probably give them something because the storyline featured homosexuals, but 4 is a bit out of touch. The movie has only grossed something like $32 million in 6 weeks and shouldn't even have been considered. I never watch these silly award shows because most of the time they give awards to movies that attempt to have some kind of real meaning and aren't even that enjoyable. I personally go to movies to be entertained and enjoy hits like Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc.

Stacy Harp posted a blog entry showing clips of Janet Parshall on Larry King Live talking about the movie and I thought Janet did a great job with a difficult interviewer.

Book Review: No More Christian Nice Guy

One of the main reasons I submitted a request to be a reviewer for Mind & Media was the chance to educate and understand more of what it means to be a Christian through books written by various authors. One book that I was very interested in reading was No More Christian Nice Guy by Paul Coughlin and I was blessed to respond fast enough to get on the list. The reason I was looking forward to this book was because I personally feel that American liberals and the media are trying to minimize the role of men in our society and I thought that Paul's book may help give me some ideas to combat this misguided practice.

The full title of the book with tag line is No More Christian Nice Guy: When being nice - instead of good - hurts men, women, and children. Paul makes a distinction between a Christian Nice Guy (CNG) and a Christian Good Guy and details the characteristics of a CNG while providing tips for conversion into a Christian Good Guy. Several questions are posed in the beginning of the book that help you figure out if you or someone you know is a CNG. If you answer Yes to too many then you should really keep reading the book and figure out how to take charge of your life. Some questions really hit home for me, i.e. "When wondering "WWJD", do you assume a gentle response?" Wow, that is exactly what I used to think when using the WWJD method. If I was getting angry or worked up I would think WWJD and try to turn into a lamb and just take what was going on at the moment. How wrong I was and thanks to Paul I understand what we should really be thinking.

Paul spent time showing how Jesus wasn't a push over type of guy and stood His ground when He needed to. I see in churches today where men are not encouraged to "Go for it" and are more likely to be instructed how to respond rather than be proactive in society. Many sermons in America tell us things we should not do to avoid sinning where we also need to hear what we should be doing proactively to spread the Word.

I did answer no to many of the questions, but do consider myself a CNG in many areas of my life. Overall, I do have more of a passive nature than an aggressive nature and am quite sacrificial with my time. I devote most of my time outside work to my wife and daughters and have given up a lot of what really interests me (rugby, daily exercise, quiet reading time), which I think was a bit too extreme. That's not to say that after reading the book I am going to now stop spending time with my family, but I am going to balance my life out a bit more and get involved with activities that help me personally.

Paul provided details about his childhood and while I couldn't relate because mine was pretty good, it was helpful to understand that many CNG traits are formed when we were young. I think that some of my passivity resulted because I have an extrovert mother who raised me that reduced my need to stand up for myself at times. It is important to sit back and think about your childhood to better understand who you are today and to also help you raise your own children correctly.

I thought the chapter on how being nice ruins love and marriage was completely spot on as I have had some recent marriage issues that I feel my passivity had a lot to do with. I know my wife likes it when I take a stand and speak up rather than playing the meek and mild person that society expects of men today. As I mentioned above I also was sacrificing too much of myself thinking this was helping my marriage and family, while I was probably making too great of a sacrifice and actually hurting these relationships. Striking a healthy balance can help you grow personally while providing a rock for your family to stand on.

My recent problems with my wife also had to do with lack of intimacy and Paul challenges us Christian men to stand up and shout about the joys of intimacy in marriage. My wife and I are doing much better now as I try to follow this advice and I completely agree with Paul that women are much more attracted to these type of men than a passive nice guy.

Throughout the book, Paul also talks about emotions and how Christian Good Guys shouldn't be afraid to show them. I personally show my happiness and anger, but rarely cry and show my sadness, disappointment, and other pure emotions and will try to be more open without being a wimpy guy.

Issues at work are also covered in a chapter, but thankfully I didn't fall into the Nice Guy role here which has a lot to do with the nature of the work that I do and the confidence I have in my abilities. My workplace is also very professional and there are rarely personnel issues to deal with. However, the issues were well covered and addressed in the book and I can see how they apply to many in the workplace.

The last couple chapters tell you how to move from being a CNG to being a Christian Good Guy and I am personally trying to apply those methods to my life since I see real value from being a Good Guy rather than a Nice Guy. If you are a Christian man or know one then I highly recommend you check out this book. I look forward to seeing how being a Good Guy can impact my life and the lives of those around me as I take a stand for being a man.

I also recommend you check out the interview with Paul Coughlin that Stacy Harp produced.

I am a Christian

One of my online buddies, Robert, send along a good note that I wanted to share with my readers since it is exactly how I feel when I say "I am a Christian". In America these days the liberal media enjoys attacking those of use who profess to be Christians and this trend will continue as we move closer to the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. I am on a business trip to Alaska again surveying some Alaska Marine Highway System ferries and brought along the Passion of the Christ movie on my PSP to watch. This movie helps me refocus my attention on Jesus and what He has done to save a sinner like me out of pure love for mankind.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting "I'm clean living."
I'm whispering "I was lost,"
Now I'm found and forgiven.

When I say..."I am a Christian"
I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble
and need CHRIST to be my guide.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak
and need HIS strength to carry on.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success.
I'm admitting I have failed
and need God to clean my mess.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect,
my flaws are far too visible
but, God believes I am worth it.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain,
I have my share of heartaches
So I call upon His name.

When I say... "I am a Christian"
I'm not holier than thou,
I'm just a simple sinner
who received God's good grace, somehow.

SlingMedia is coming to the rescue!

You have to love when a company sees you are having some issues and contacts you to offer support directly. Jeremy emailed me to say I should contact him directly to get remote viewing setup on my SlingBox. I think it is either a SMC router issue or something else that I am making more difficult than it needs to be since everyone else who I know that has one was able to get things working quickly with no real issues.

I am in Alaska for a few days so I can't get it setup, but will try later this week so I can use the SlingBox when our family goes to DisneyWorld in a week.

Why can't I get remote viewing on my SlingBox working?

Sorry my posting has been light, but I have been on the road quite a bit and when I am in town I am SWAMPED at work. So then last night and today I spent about 4-6 hours trying everything I know to get the remote viewing functionality working on my new SlingBox. My basic home setup is a Cisco 678 DSL modem with Qwest DSL and connected to a SMC Barricade G router. With this setup I was able to get the SlingBox working like a champ within my own home network, but kept getting errors trying to get remote viewing setup. I tried port forwarding setup using the Port Forward website and even though I did everything shown on the site I still couldn't get it working. I even Telnetted into my Cisco router to open port 5001, but that didn't work either.

Thinking the SMC or the Cisco could be the problem, I went out to CompUSA last night and again this morning and bought a D-Link router and ActionTec ADSL modem/router. I tried using just the ActionTec as a modem and wireless router without success, although the ActionTec was easier to setup and access than the Cisco. I then tried the ActionTec in conjuction with the D-Link and SMC routers without success. I tried the D-Link with the Cisco, but I couldn't even get regular internet working going through the D-Link since it looks like the Cisco uses a cable with less connection points than the D-Link requires. On every setup, except the Cisco and D-Link, I was able to get the SlingBox to work within my home network, but I could never get it setup for remote viewing.

It is cool to watch TV anywhere in the house with the SlingBox and my Tablet PC, but with all my travel coming up I really wanted to get remote viewing setup. I may try contacting Sling Media directly soon, but with a trip starting tomorrow up in Alaska I don't think I have anymore time to troubleshoot my setup.

The thing is it seems that everyone else I know with a SlingBox just plugs it in and away they go and can't believe someone like me that is pretty technically competent is having so much trouble. If anyone has any tips, then please feel free to send them to me at palmsolo@gmail.com.

Just returned from California, after my Alaska trip

The day after I returned from Ketchikan I headed out to the Moss Landing/Monterey Bay, California area to conduct a stability test on an oceanographic research vessel. The weather was beautiful with temperatures in the upper 60s and lower 70s, sun with no wind, not a cloud in the sky and it was just perfect. Our stability test went well and the time flew by as we headed home after just 2 days. I am actually in the office for 3 days the rest of the week and then head on up to Ketchikan again for more AMHS ferry surveys. After that I head to Disney World with the family and then go to Virginia the day after I return from there.

I will post a hilarious video taken with my N90 here soon of my youngest daughters basketball game. She is 6 and is actually quite a good player, but it is really funny to watch boys and girls in kindergarten playing hoops. I may also post some photos of my recent California trip and will try to add some thoughts about CES and any other gadget related things I can think of. Oh yeah, I did just receive my SlingBox last night too and will have to get it hooked up before I head back up to Alaska so I can watch some recorded content or movies with my family at night in the hotel.

Happy New Year! I'm ready for a new start.

Happy New Year everyone! The title of our church sermon on Sunday was "The New Start" and the passage we studied was Philippians 3:13-14. The sermon dealt with forgetting the things which are behind us and foreseeing those things which are before us. I have to confess that I have been a very lazy Christian the last few months and have not spent a good deal of time in the Word or in prayer and was pleased to hear this sermon. I will honestly apply the principles from the sermon and will start 2006 fresh with a vow to devote more time and energy on growing in my Christian life. The Bible is an amazing resource and I look forward to getting into it more this year. I will be using my devices to help me with this goal since I always have one with me and will be loading up the Bible on all of them before I take my first business trip of the year on Wednesday.

I have two major projects at work that I am managing and without the Lord there to support and guide me, I am actually a bit fearful of the magnitude of the projects. They both require lots of travel over the next six months with lots of work in between the trips. The clients are important to our company and without the comfort and confidence I gain by being close to the Lord, I don't think I could complete them with the best results.

I'll try to keep posting regularly here on my blog, but also may be adding more thoughts and experiences from my walk with Jesus.
