palmsolo: Geeking for Jesus

Friday, February 27, 2004

My wife and I went to see The Passion of The Christ movie last night and I have to tell you that I was so exhausted from the emotional experience that I even missed my vanpool this morning. I have to say that my life will actually change as a result of this movie, which I have never said before after watching a movie. I have read about the punishment Jesus took to save all of us, but until you actually see what it was like it doesn't really hit you.

I could barely watch the lashings that the Romans delivered to Jesus and each time they struck Him I felt a slash through my heart and could not stop crying. I wasn't crying in anger at the Romans or the high priests, but at the pain and suffering that Jesus took to save my life and secure a place in Heaven for me. I am almost crying just writing this blog entry because of the vivid reality of the torture He suffered for everyone of us.

I have been voted in as the first elder of our new church and have been conducting the weekly communion service that last three weeks. I can tell you that my dialog will change this week and communion will NEVER be the same for me again. I don't know if I will even be able to make it through communion this week with the images of Christ's suffering running through my head.

I wish there was a message of salvation at the end of the movie for those viewers who are not Christians so they can have that opportunity and understand what the movie really means. I know I will personally be changing my attitude towards my wife and daughters and will pray that I no longer have a fear of rejection when the opportunity to speak out about Jesus arises. The movie makes you realize how shallow and petty our feelings of embarrassment or denial are when we could be making a stand for Jesus.

Our church is also going through Pastor Rick Warren's 40 Days of Purpose (based on the Purpose Driven Life book) program and I am facilitating one of the small groups. This movie helps to force you to do a self evaluation about your life and fits in wonderfully with figuring out your purpose here on this earth.

I highly recommend you go see The Passion of The Christ, but don't recommend taking children under about 12 to 14 due to the images of demons and satan. They are also probably not ready to see how much punishment Jesus suffered at the hands of the Romans.

I bought a Tungsten T3 from ebay a couple weeks ago and haven't done much with it since I bought it because I was happy with the Tapwave Zodiac. A couple days ago I decided to try using the T3 to really see what it was about and now I have to say that I am very impressed. Versamail works quite well for email and the WebPro browser is much better than the one on the Zodiac. The biggest issue I have with the Zodiac browser is that you cannot stop a page from loading once it starts. WebPro has also been very fast through the Bluetooth connection to my Nokia 3650. As a result of the T3 performance, I have actually gone back to using my Nokia 3650 primarily as a modem and put the Motorola MPx200 away for the times when I have the T3 with me. I wish I had a Smartphone with Bluetooth so I wouldn't have to keep swapping SIM cards, but the one from Mobius that was promised to us still hasn't arrived yet.

I hated the slider on the T3 at first, but actually am growing to like it because the T3 is very pocketable in the collapsed mode. The Zodiac is very ergonomically designed for landscape viewing, but is quite a large PDA and not very pocketable. Exideas also just released a Tungsten T3 version of MessagEase that works in both Portrait and Landscape modes, unlike the FitalyVirtual keyboard that only works in Portrait modes. I didn't like inputting text on the Zodiac and the MessagEase ROCKS!

I am keeping the Zodiac for now since the 128MB RAM and multimedia is still awesome, but I can see why people love the T3 design.

I finally finished up writing my contributions for the Windows Mobile 2003 book, 7 chapters total, and now have to get back to catching up on my reviews. I have about 20 items pending and hate taking so long to review things for the developers and manufacturers. I haven't asked for many items lately to review since my backlog is so long.

A great piece of software that I am reviewing has helped me keep track of my review status and is a refreshing way to organize my thoughts, projects, etc. MindManager X5 is a mind mapping software application that is extremely powerful. I am still using the Electrovaya Tablet PC that I reviewed and MindManager is awesome on a Tablet PC with pen input options built into the software.

Another amazing Pocket PC application that I am beta testing is PlanMaker from SoftMaker. PlanMaker is an Excel replacement application and is as powerful as TextMaker, the Word replacement. The beta has been pretty stable so far and has only had trouble with some large spreadsheets with integrated macros.

I have had the Tungsten T3 for about a week now, but really haven't used it too much since I am extremely happy with the Tapwave Zodiac2. And just think I actually almost sent the Zodiac back during my 30 day return period. Boy, that would have been a mistake.

I have been visiting a couple of Sammy McLoughlin's sites regularly the last couple of weeks and am hooked on how much information he and his team post daily. You can check out Palm Addict and Handheld Addict and see that there are some great contests available to readers.

Our church just had our simulcast kick off sermon last night for the 40 Days of Purpose campaign. If you haven't heard of this it is the church program associated with the best selling book, The Purpose Driven Life, by Pastor Rick Warren. I am leading a small group on Monday nights and am looking forward to this excellent program. In typical Geek fashion, I have the Palm Reader ebook and the Audible book in addition to a hard copy. My only fear is that I will see I am spending too much time on PDA stuff:) Then again, I do review Christian software and my lifestyle may be a witness to others.

It seems the new CLIE TH55 is now shipping from Sony and I am a bit tempted by this device except for one major missing feature, Bluetooth. Now that I use a BT phone and can connect anywhere I require integrated BT in all my devices. I also have the Zodiac and T3 now so I am pretty satisfied with Palm devices, although I am sure I'll need to get a OS 6 device in the next couple months.

The TH55 has some decent specs and I read that the battery life is quite amazing. Sony really does have pretty poor button layout on most of their current devices that makes game playing a bit difficult. Games are usually the number one seller at Handango and I have to admit to loving them on my devices.

I returned from Hawaii on Saturday and have to say that I continue to enjoy my iPAQ 4350. I was able to receive a great T-Mobile signal in Honolulu and was able to get my email downloaded on my Motorola MPx200. However, text input is tough on the Smartphone so I used the iPAQ to download emails, write them to my daughters, write up my daily news blurbs and check out sites. I also used the Tapwave Zodiac to download emails using the excellent SnapperMail program. Web browsing could be great on the Zodiac, but the browser is not that great and I actually could not access the Geek.com news administration site with it. I did do some writing using the Targus IR keyboard that I am reviewing and that worked well when the IR ports could be lined up. I was also able to use my work laptop connected to the Motorola MPx200 Smartphone via the USB cable. I have now been on two business trips recently and the Pocket PC and smartphone solution seemed to be the best. I could easily leave behind the laptop on my next trip:)

I received the new Tungsten T3 I bought off ebay on Saturday when I returned from Hawaii. I have to say after playing with it for about an hour that the Tapwave Zodiac 2 is a more compelling hardware platform and really ROCKS! I'll keep the T3 for now so I can review the TomTom GPS solution in a couple weeks and some other T3 specific items. The T3 is well supported, but the Zodiac is more enjoyable. I love navigating around using the left analog controller and am excited about the future of this device.

Oh boy, my post yesterday concerning the Tapwave Zodiac sounds like a soap opera:) I wanted to return the unit, but there was just so much right with it and I am absolutely loving playing games on it that I decided to keep it and add a T3 to the mix. Yes, I must admit I love to play games on my PDAs and now that it is out in the open I can relax and enjoy my devices:)

I am off to Hawaii for business the rest of the week and then things should slow down a bit at work so I can stop working overtime and get back to blogging regularly. Thanks for your patience and continued visiting. It is nice to know there are others out there like me:)

It looks like my blog may be down to a weekly update for a while as I am EXTREMELY busy at work as well as trying to write some chapters in the Windows Mobile 2003 book. Not to mention that I have about 20 reviews under some form of progress. Thanks for your patience and for visiting my blog.
