palmsolo: Geeking for Jesus

I've received a couple comments regarding using my Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 to connect via Bluetooth to my Nokia 3650 and just ordered an Ambicom Bluetooth CF card based on recommendations from the Zaurus forums. I have been using my Z to connect via WiFi at home lately and find that Opera is my favorite browser. I love being able to open multiple windows and surf at incredible speeds compared to PIE on my 2215 and NetFront on my CLIE. I also am bidding on extra Zaurus batteries because they get burned up fairly quickly. I read of others getting 50% or more off deals at their Office Depot stores, but mine don't even have any Z stuff in stock. I can't wait to test out the speed and performance of Opera using my GPRS connection. Thanks to Mike Duncan for affirming my thoughts of using the Z to connect.

I also received feedback on the Bluetooth Memory Stick, but I have decided to wait until at least the UX series or T3 is released and if I don't want one of those then I will wait for a Palm OS6 device. I was thinking seriously about the Tungsten T2, but after making a comparsion sheet and noting that the CLIE has a Flash player, outstanding audio and visual support, integrated keyboard, and dual slots I just can't give it up. I really like integrated keyboards, especially for wireless communications and the upcoming iPaq 4000 series may be something to seriously look at in September or October. So now I will just spend some time with my existing devices and really see how great they are.

I authored the intro to this month's PDAGeek newsletter again and this time focused on my current Palm purchasing decision. You know the more I sat down and wrote out what I would like I realized that I only use WiFi at home and then primarily use my Sharp Zaurus 5500 because Opera 6 ROCKS! I then thought that I really don't need a keyboard like I have on the CLIE NX70 since the Z also works so much better with Office type documents. As a result, I am leaning strongly towards trading my NX70 for a Tungsten T2 and then selling my Sony WiFi card and getting one that works better with Windows Mobile 2003 so I can take advantage of the new features in the OS. I have read alot about the Zero Configuration wireless stuff, but haven't been able to experience it with my officially unsupported WiFi card. Then again the SanDisk SD WiFi should be out in a couple weeks and I can then wait until November to get the Palm drivers and use WiFi with that as well. I don't know if drivers for the SD WiFi will be written for the Z, but given the awesome Linux community I think it is only a matter of time.

The CLIE is very nice and I think I will miss the large display, but if the T3 really does come out in the future then I can always upgrade to that. I wrote and asked for comments in the PDAGeek newsletter so I think I will wait and see what advice readers give me before making a final decision on my Palm situation.

I am firmly planted with the Z and the iPaq 2215 and will stick with them for some time. I have had the NX70 now for close to 8 months and my usual upgrade cycle is 6 months so I am doing well there.

I also have received a few emails asking that I put comments on my blog and will work on that soon. Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts with me.

Palm has officially announced the Tungsten T2 today and I have to admit that it does tempt me. I am loving Bluetooth with my Nokia 3650 and iPaq 2215 (although the iPaq is a bit buggy at this time). I have seen the photos of the rumored Tungsten T3 that I would probably switch my NX70 for in a second and may just end up waiting until September or October. I would give up a thumboard and a camera, but gain RAM and Bluetooth. I am fairly happy with my NX70 and will probably stick with it until Palm OS6 comes out later this year or in 2004, but my PDA lust still has me thinking.

I don't use the camera much on my CLIX NX70, especially now that my Nokia 3650 allows me to take photos of about the same quality. I do like thumb keyboards and would probably be all over the Tungsten C if there was a voice recorder, stereo sound, and Bluetooth support. I loved the Tungsten C keyboard, except for it not being backlit. I suppose I could get a Bluetooth Memory Stick and upgrade to the NX73 or NX80 and be satsified for a while.

I did just buy a 512MB CF card for $85 and actually had an ebay ad to sell it since I was thinking of dumping CF, but I will stick with my 2215 for quite a while. It is small and pocketable and I like the buttons and display better than the 1940 series. Bellagio should be sending me a review case next week for the 2215 and I can't wait to start carrying it around everywhere with me. I hope HP comes out with an update since I now have to soft reset mine a couple times a day due to Bluetooth, battery, and mysterious non-responsiveness to the power button issues.

Sony now has the UX-50 on the SonyStyle site and lists it for a whopping $700!!! I will have to wait and actually see one of these because I think the display may be too small and I want to see if portrait mode is supported.

Here is the one I really can't wait for, the Tungsten T3. Wow, 51MB of RAM, Bluetooth, and Hi-Res+ with a sliding option to show the whole display even in landscape mode. I brought this up several times (and in my unposted Tungsten C review) and it looks like Palm is listening to its customers. Palm quality with a virtual Graffiti area will ROCK!! I also hope it has the poweful 400MHz processor like the Tungsten C. If this comes out, then I will most likely be saying goodbye to Sony and hello back to my roots in a Palm device. The last Palm devices I owned was the Vx.

Sony just announced the new CLIE UX-50 and infoSync World has all the details and some of the best pics. As you can see the new CLIE is a landscape only mode PDA with a keyboard and flip and twist screen. The UX-50 has integrated Bluetooth and 802.11b wireless connectivity, one Memory Stick slot, 16MB of usable RAM with 22MB for applications, Palm OS 5.2, and a 0.3 megapixel camera like the NX70 and NX73. Now this seriously tempts me to upgrade from my NX70 since I mainly use my device for surfing, email, and ebook reading. I am only concerned about game play on this new device since the buttons do not seem to work well with them. I also wonder how software will work on the device in landscape mode.

I have also been experiencing issues with my iPaq 2215. I leave it off in the case and several mornings when I wake up the battery is dead. I also find that I sometimes have to perform a soft reset to turn it on and often have to perform soft resets to get my Bluetooth GPRS connection working again. I still have to perform soft resets with my WiFi card in to get it going. I hope all these issues are software related that HP can fix with an update or else I may consider going back to Fry's and exchanging it for something else.

I also went to Circuit City yesterday to check out the 1940 series again and found that the yellow screen is not visible if you hold the device parallel to you. Any tilt in the angle makes the yellow appear. Very strange and a bit annoying, but the color saturation is better on the 1940 than the 2215.

I have been debating whether or not to trade my NX70 in for a NX80 at CompUSA and decided to check out the NX80 for myself. They had them at Circuit City in Tacoma and I have to say that I am not that impressed yet. The outside felt like plastic and not as solid as my NX70. The screen looked about the same, the retractable CF slot looks like a nice idea, and the hardware buttons on the display are an improvement. I don't think I like the keyboard since the keys felt too flush with the device, although the spacing was adequate. I like the feel of the NX70 keyboard better. There is only about 500kb more RAM on the NX80 because I get 11MB plus the 4.5MB of ROM using JackFlash. I plan on checking them out some more when my 3 daughters are not with me, but as of this time I am sticking with my rock solid 70.

I also had the chance to check out an iPaq 1945 and have to say I am very happy I bought the 2215. The 1945 display had a noticeable yellow tint on every screen that was supposed to be white. Why couldn't HP just stick with that wonderful 1910 display. I don't really like the 1910/1940 buttons and with the yellow display I will be recommending the 2215 to people I speak to about these new devices.

I just ordered a Krussell leather case for my Nokia 3650 and am truly enjoying this device. I still haven't been able to get the Nokia PC Suite working with my Ambicom dongle, but I found a ClieSource link that should solve this and hope to work on it tonight. I also have the Belkin BT dongle, but for some reason it doesn't want to play well with my Windows XP desktop and I plan on selling it at the PSHUG garage sale in August or September.

I just returned from a great weekend of camping at the lake. We had our 3rd annual church campout and I ran the games (gunny sack, watermelon seed spitting, hot dog eating, egg toss, etc). The weather was perfect and my Mom even brought their boat out for some inner tubing fun.

I was able to finally play with the TG50 some more and as a result I just called Dell and am returning it to them tomorrow. The device is a nice unit for someone who wants integrated Bluetooth on a Palm device, but the smaller screen (with visible bottom shadows) is just too small after using my large NX display. I may get a BT MemoryStick card for $90 or I may just not use Bluetooth on my Palm and stick with BT on my iPaq. I am very tempted by the new NX80 with better camera, backlit keyboard, and hardware buttons around the display and may exercise my CompUSA TAP in a couple weeks. I want to see if there is any flash available with JackFlash (although the full 16MB is usable), how well the CF driver is and if the EruWare driver works with it, and other user feedback on the device. I like my NX70 and just wish the keyboard was backlit and the camera was a bit better.

I am still enjoying my iPaq 2215, but get annoyed sometimes when the connection tries to start up on some programs when I don't want to get connected. The Bluetooth Manager HP put on the device is very nice, but the WiFi functionality and support by Microsoft still leaves something to be desired. Many applications are now working better in Windows Mobile 2003 and I love connecting just about anywhere I want.

I sold my Newton 2000 and accessories last night when an ebay bidder used the Buy it Now feature. I lost a little money, but that's to be expected. I also received my TG50 from Dell, but have only had time to charge it and then became too busy with work. I hope to get some time with it tonight, but I have a couple of reviews (Palm Office Suites and Tungsten C) to finish before the July 4th weekend when we are going camping with our church.

I also see that Pocket PC Thoughts is starting a new subscriber services account and am trying to figure out at what level I will join. I read Jason's mobile forums quite a bit with my "connected" devices and will probably at least join with a Lite subscription.
